Harvest Pizza

July 7, 2014

This is my second favorite harvest pizza location by far. You would think that they would all be the same, right? Sort of like how chain restaurants typically have the same menu items across the board. Well, this definitely not the case. This is one of the things that I appreciate about this particular local brand. The menu items at each of them are not the same, and if they are. They don’t taste the same.

The meat with the polenta is freaking PHENOMENAL! Go forth and get that to set your meal off. You will thank me for this later. The textures and flavors play off of each other well. The meatballs melt in your mouth, and the polenta is rich and creamy. If you are a vegan… I have No suggestions for you, my apologies.

Hounddog’s Pizza

Pizza from Hound Dog's Pizza in Columbus, Ohio

I have driven by this place a lot, and I hadn’t given It a chance until earlier this year. One of the reasons I didn’t check this spot out is because it loomed super divey to me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not above going to a dive to eat, but this place just looked too dingy for my taste initially. What made me go in to check this place out we’re the reviews on yelp.

I walked into the restaurant, and I almost wanted to leave empty-handed. It was dark and dimly lit and full of grungy rocker type folks, not that that was an issue. I decided to what the heck when in Rome. So instead of making my order to go, I got it for there. I ordered a pepperoni pizza with basil and light garlic.

The Blessings

July 7, 2014

Gratiarum action, the “act of thanks.” Before every meal, we give thanks for it and each other. When you do this for all of your life, how can you not take it for granted?

Just because you may utter the same phrase over and over the years doesn’t mean you do not believe what it is that you are saying, but do you take the time out to think and reflect on what it is that you are saying?

Creekside Gahanna

Mike Nicholson takes a stroll with family at Creekside Gahanna

I frequent Creekside with my family. During the warmer months, we walk here. During the colder months like now, we drive and park in the free parking lot. The other great thing about this public space is that it’s near many local small businesses, from boutique clothing shops to eateries.

The park is always kept clean, and there are never a lot of people present. There are quite a few walkways, trails, and bodies of water. The ponds that pond that they have there is filled with lots of ducks during the warmer months. You can even feed them as long as you do so and follow the rules (no bread). One of the wooden walkways takes you to a marsh area filled with snapping turtles.

Starting in December, they put out the lights. The colors are quite a spectacle. We took our 2-year-old there, and it was quite stimulating for him. He was in complete awe and thoroughly engaged. My favorite thing there during this time is the display near the fountain area. There are these balls, strings, and snowflakes of lights that blink to the sound of the Christmas music they have present. The best part of all of this is that you do not have to pay for this wonderful display.

Social Media Tomfoolery

Mike Nicholson in thought

I recently had a conversation with an individual about their experience with an Instagram fitness regimen. This is what they shared with me. (Name is not the real name used in the story)

It’s the middle of a productive day, and Sally decides to take a break and post her pics from last night’s escapades on Instagram. Afterward, she begins to scroll through the main timeline to come across a fitness influencer and their fitness program. Sally noticed they have thousands of followers. She becomes interested and clicks the follow button.

The Deadbeat Dad

July 6, 2014
Playing with oldest son in Florida

If you know me at even the very least, and you read the title to this entry. You probably were in disbelief. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this was allegedly the case for the people who may be reading this post that have known me before and when my first son was born. These individuals have come to know me to be a really involved father. To these individuals, this may come to be a shock of sorts. Well, you are not alone because it was a shock to me as well.

It all started during a field trip with my son’s school at the time. I was chaperoning as I normally did on these occasions. While on the bus. A mother of one of the students, who was also chaperoning, decided to approach me and strike up a conversation. It started with her being surprised that I was taking the time to accompany the school on this trip. To which I responded with the reason for her surprise was because this was her first field trip with the students as her husband was the one who usually came on the trips with us. She then proceeds to tell me how she knew that I was not really involved in my son’s life and that I shouldn’t have any custodial rights. In all honesty, my first instinct was to cuss her out in front of all the children, teachers, staff, parents, and surrounding vehicles, but I didn’t. Evidently, she missed my acknowledgment of how I go on all the field trips and was often at the school supporting the teachers and staff and walked the campus as a security measure for the institution. So I tightened my lips and turned my head ever so slightly to display my disgust with her accusations. I didn’t have to explain myself to her or anybody.

This belief of me being an uninvolved parent was not just this woman’s opinion; quite a few people believed it. Now the thing that I didn’t mention about the person that shared their sentiment in the previous paragraph was that I knew her and her husband for about 8 years at this time. The other folk who participated in this myth have known for that amount of time or even longer. I guess the knowing was a one-way street because they should have known me and how I am for my kid(s).

In another instance. A counselor exclaimed how she understood me to be a neglectful father. When this individual shared this with me. I laughed in their face. In turn, they expressed to me how this was no laughing matter and the serious repercussions and consequences that could occur if this was found to be indeed true. She notified me that she had talked to several associates and would be going to my son’s school to talk with the people there. The following day she visits me at my place of business to tell me that she went to the school and spoke with several school officials. She then said to her surprise they told her, “…Mr. Nicholson was just recently awarded MOST INVOLVED PARENT OF THE YEAR at our school. He’s here practically every week helping out…” to which I replied, “That is why I laughed in your face😂.”

Sometimes you hear or read things and believe what you read or hear at first. We’ve been bombarded with the narrative of how fathers and black fathers, in particular, are not involved in their kid’s lives, are deadbeat dads, are not existent, etc. So much so that we began to believe it without investigating. That’s what happened with the mother on the field trip and the other people that knew me for years. They believed what sounded good due to hearing the repetitive commentary of deadbeat/father neglect despite what they saw with their eyes. What happened to the folks that spouted this crazy nonsense? They came around and apologized for their accusations but by then. It did not really matter to me, for their value was lessened in my life for their initial belief.
